How AI Pins Work in PinLaunchr

Most AI pin marketing is a black box, which is useless when a pin comes out wrong. Here's the actual mechanism — the three-step pipeline, what each step costs, where the real control lives, and the awkward parts we'd rather tell you than have you discover.

Most "AI pin generator" marketing is a black box: you type a thing, magic happens, pins appear. That is not useful when a pin comes out wrong and you need to know which knob to turn.

So here is the actual mechanism — what runs when you click generate, what each step costs, which models exist and why, and where the real control lives. Including the parts that are awkward: a model that cannot render Pinterest's recommended aspect ratio, and an option that disappears when you switch providers.

The short answer

Every pin runs a three-step pipeline: write the image prompt (free), write the title and description (1 credit), render the image (2, 4, or 12 credits depending on the model). It runs server-side as one job per pin, so you can close the tab.

Pins land in a review queue — you approve each one before it publishes. That is Pinterest's rule, not our preference.

The pipeline: what happens when you click generate

A "pin" is not one AI call. It is three, and only two of them are charged.

Step 1 surprises people — the prompt-writing step is a real AI call and it is not charged.

Two design decisions worth knowing about:

  • It runs server-side, as one job per pin. Close the tab, shut the laptop, navigate away — the batch keeps going. And because each pin is its own job, one failure does not take down a batch of thirty.
  • Charge-on-success. The app checks you can afford a step before calling the model, but deducts credits only after it succeeds. A failed generation does not cost you.

The two input modes

Line per pin

Paste a list; get one pin per line. The useful part most people miss: a line can be a URL or just a keyword. So you can feed it twenty blog URLs, or twenty topic ideas with no URLs at all. Both are valid inputs.

One URL → many pins

Give it a single URL and ask for several pins from it — three by default, up to 200. This is the mode that matters most for bloggers, because one post genuinely supports several pins: each targeting a different search angle rather than being a duplicate of the last.

For bulk work there is also CSV import — export a product catalogue or a list of posts and turn the rows into pins.

The eight models, and why there are tiers

You should not have to know model names to make a pin. So models are grouped into three tiers by what they cost to run, and picking a tier picks a sensible model for you. The individual picker is there when you want it.

High Quality is the default tier and the one most pins should use. The reasoning behind that is in how to make cheaper AI pins.

Text models are a separate setting — and they all cost 1 credit regardless of which you pick. There is no credit reason to stay on the cheapest one.

Two providers (and one honest gap)

Images can be rendered through Kie.ai (the default) or Fal.ai. They are alternative backends for the same models, switchable on the Create page.

The principle: switching providers changes nothing you can see. Model names, credit costs, your stored pins, history, and publishing stay identical — only which backend renders the next image changes. So a provider having a bad day does not strand you.

⚠ The exception we won't hide

4O Image is not available on Fal.ai. Fal has no distinct GPT-4o image endpoint. Rather than quietly aliasing it to a different model and letting you believe you got 4O Image, the app hides or disables that option when Fal is selected. A missing option is more honest than fake compatibility.

Pin styles and infographic layouts

Style is not a filter — it changes the layout the AI aims for, which is a structural difference.

Five pin styles: Smart Auto (it decides), Close-Up Editorial, Hero Image, Split Image, and Collage Roundup. A listicle pin built as a Collage Roundup is a genuinely different artefact from the same content as a Hero Image.

Eight infographic layouts: Smart Auto, Step by Step, Tips List, Comparison, Checklist, Facts & Benefits, Timeline, and Do/Don't. These exist because an infographic pin has a job a photo pin does not — it must stay readable at thumbnail size on a phone.

Output language is a separate setting: English, Spanish, German, French, Italian. On a search engine this matters — someone searching in Spanish types Spanish queries, and an English title will not match them.

Aspect ratio: what to actually pick

Pick 2:3. That is Pinterest's own recommendation, and we would rather point you at the source than at our defaults.

"Larger aspect ratios may get cut off in people's feeds."

PinLaunchr offers several ratios — 2:3, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and more. Taller shapes like 9:16 do occupy more feed space, which is why they are popular, but they are also precisely the "larger aspect ratios" Pinterest cautions about. If you want to follow Pinterest's published guidance, choose 2:3.

⚠ A real quirk: Z-Image can't do 2:3

Z-Image's API rejects the 2:3 ratio outright. A 2:3 request on that model is mapped to the nearest portrait shape it supports (3:4) rather than failing. So if 2:3 specifically matters to you, use a High Quality or Premium model rather than the Fast tier. This is the kind of thing you only learn by reading the code — so now you have.

Prompt Studio: the real control

When a pin comes out wrong, the instinct is to reach for a more expensive model. Usually the brief was the problem, and a pricier model just renders the same flawed brief more beautifully — at three times the cost.

Prompt Studio is where you fix the brief. You can edit prompts per pin style and per model+style combination, because a prompt that sings on Nano Banana Pro may need different wording on Z-Image. Your edits apply to every future pin rather than being retyped each time.

Graceful degradation, not failure

Z-Image caps prompts at 1,000 characters. Rather than letting the API reject an over-long prompt outright, PinLaunchr trims it at a sentence or word boundary — so it degrades into a shorter coherent brief instead of erroring out mid-batch.

The review queue and free design edits

Generated pins land in a review queue. Nothing publishes until you approve it.

That is not a UX oversight — it is the rule. Pinterest's developer guidelines state that "the end user must choose each Pin to be published." A tool that generated and posted without you looking would be outside that line. It is also just sensible: image models occasionally put text across a face, and a two-second glance catches what no automated check reliably would.

From the queue you can publish immediately or schedule, and choose which connected Pinterest account it goes out as if you run several.

The most underused feature

The Smart Pin Designer edits headlines, layout, and colours for zero credits — design is not a model call. Regenerating a pin to change a word costs 4 credits on High Quality or 12 on Premium. Fixing the word in the designer costs nothing. If your problem is wording, it is a design problem, not a generation problem.

Variations from pins that worked

When a pin performs, the cheapest next pin is a variation of it — you are starting from a concept your analytics already validated rather than paying to rediscover one.

  • Regenerate Similar — one step: same concept, new render.
  • AI Variation — two steps: it proposes several distinct concepts based on the pin, you pick the ones worth making, then it generates those.

The maths favours this heavily. Generating five fresh Premium concepts hoping one lands costs 65 credits. Building variations from a proven winner amplifies evidence instead of guessing — and regenerating an image charges only the image credits, since the title and description you already have are not re-billed.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't guarantee results. No tool can promise traffic, saves, or sales. Treat any that does as a warning sign — including us, if we ever do.
  • It doesn't do engagement automation. No following, unfollowing, commenting, or messaging. Pinterest's guidelines name those actions specifically, and we deliberately do not offer them.
  • It's Pinterest-only. No Instagram, X, or Facebook.
  • It doesn't replace judgment. The review queue is by design — for the rules, and because you know your audience better than a model does.
  • It won't fix an unvalidated channel. If you are not publishing consistently with free tools yet, a generator is a bill attached to the same problem. Start with the free stack.

How does PinLaunchr generate a Pinterest pin?

What can I use as input — do I need a URL?

Which AI image models can I use?

Eight, grouped into three quality tiers by what they cost to run:

  • Fast (2 credits): Z-Image, Ideogram V3 Turbo. Roughly 10–15 seconds per image.
  • High Quality (4 credits): GPT Image, Flux Pro, 4O Image, Seedream 4.5. This tier is the default, and GPT Image is the default model within it.
  • Premium (12 credits): Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana Pro. Slower — roughly 30–90 seconds — and the highest quality.

What aspect ratio should I choose for Pinterest pins?

2:3 — because that is Pinterest's own recommendation. Pinterest states: "We recommend using a 2:3 aspect ratio, or 1000 x 1500 pixels," and warns that "Larger aspect ratios may get cut off in people's feeds."

Can I control the style of the pins?

Yes, at two levels.

Prompt Studio is the deeper level: you edit the underlying prompts per style and per model, so your improvements apply to every future pin instead of being retyped each time.

What is Prompt Studio?

It is where you edit the prompts that sit behind generation, rather than accepting whatever we shipped. You can set prompts per pin style and per model+style combination — because a prompt that works beautifully on Nano Banana Pro may need different wording on Z-Image.

This matters more than most people expect. When a pin comes out wrong, the instinct is to reach for a more expensive model — but usually the brief was the problem, and a pricier model just renders the same flawed brief more beautifully. A technical detail it accounts for: Z-Image caps prompts at 1,000 characters. Rather than letting the API reject an over-long prompt, PinLaunchr trims it at a sentence or word boundary so it degrades gracefully instead of failing.

Can I edit a pin after it's generated?

Yes, and this is the most underused part of the product. The Smart Pin Designer lets you change headlines, move text, adjust layout, swap colours, and apply templates — and design edits cost zero credits, because they are not model calls.

That distinction saves real money. If a pin is 90% right and the headline is slightly off, regenerating the image costs 4 credits on High Quality or 12 on Premium. Fixing the words in the designer costs nothing and takes less time.

People routinely burn a quarter of their monthly allowance re-rendering pins to change a few words. If your problem is wording or layout, it is a design problem, not a generation problem — open the designer.

What happens to pins after they're generated?

They land in a review queue rather than going straight to Pinterest. You look at them, keep what you want, fix anything that needs fixing, and then schedule or publish the ones you approve.

That step is not friction we forgot to remove — it is a requirement. Pinterest's developer guidelines state that "the end user must choose each Pin to be published." A tool that generated and posted without you looking would be outside that rule.

One caution: keyword research should also be done in the target language. Pinterest Trends and search autocomplete reflect what users actually type, and translating an English keyword list rarely produces the phrasing native speakers use.

The two things worth internalising: fix prompts rather than escalating models, and edit in the designer rather than regenerating. Those two habits account for most of the difference between people who find this cheap and people who find it expensive.
